How Long Does a Yard Ramp Last? Lifespan by Material and Use

There’s no single answer. Lifespan depends on build quality, material, how hard the ramp works, and how well it’s maintained. A well-built ramp under normal use commonly runs 12 to 15 years, and a well-maintained steel or aluminum ramp can reach 20 years or more.

What Actually Determines Lifespan

  • Build quality. A ramp engineered and welded to a high standard simply outlasts a cheaper build. Lower-quality ramps often show serious wear, cracked welds, failing legs, within 6 to 8 years, while a quality ramp with regular maintenance routinely reaches 12 to 15.

  • Usage intensity. A ramp crossed a few times a week wears far slower than one running heavy, constant forklift traffic all day, every day.
  • Environmental exposure. Salt air, heavy humidity, and extreme temperature swings accelerate wear, particularly corrosion on steel components.
  • Maintenance. Routine inspection and prompt repair of small issues, before they become structural problems, is the single biggest factor separating a 20-year ramp from an 8-year one.

These ranges assume the ramp stays within its rated capacity throughout its service life. Regular overloading shortens any ramp’s lifespan regardless of build quality.

Signs a Ramp Is Nearing the End of Its Service Life

  • Cracks or weld separation that recur after repair
  • Corrosion that’s progressed past surface rust into structural pitting

  • Hydraulic components (on equipped models) that fail to hold position reliably

Your pre-shift inspection routine is what catches these signs early, long before they become a safety issue.

How to Maximize Lifespan

  1. Inspect before every shift, not just periodically.
  2. Repair small issues immediately rather than letting them progress.
  3. Keep the deck clear of standing water, debris, and corrosive material.
  4. Stay well within the rated capacity rather than operating near the limit routinely.
  5. Store or shield the ramp from unnecessary weather exposure when it’s not in use.
