Steel vs. Aluminum Yard Ramps: Which Lasts Longer?

Steel and aluminum yard ramps solve the same problem in different ways. Steel wins on raw durability and weight capacity. Aluminum wins on corrosion resistance and mobility. Which one lasts longer depends on your environment and how the ramp gets used, not on which material is “better” in the abstract.

Weight Capacity
Steel ramps generally handle higher weight capacities than aluminum ramps of comparable size. If you’re regularly moving heavy machinery, loaded pallets in bulk, or oversized freight, steel gives you more headroom before you’re pushing a ramp near its rated limit.

Aluminum ramps still cover most standard forklift and pallet-jack loads. The gap only matters if your operation runs at the higher end of typical loads.

Corrosion Resistance
Aluminum doesn’t rust. Steel does, unless it’s properly coated and maintained.

  • Coastal or humid climates favor aluminum, since salt air and moisture accelerate steel corrosion even with a protective coating.
  • Dry, inland climates narrow the gap considerably. Steel’s corrosion risk drops when humidity and salt exposure are low.
  • Galvanized or powder-coated steel closes most of the gap in any climate, but the coating needs periodic inspection and touch-up to keep doing its job.

Weather and Environmental Exposure
Steel ramps hold up better under sustained heavy use and impact, curbs, forklift contact, and general wear and tear that comes with a busy dock. Aluminum is lighter, which helps mobility, but it’s also more prone to denting or bending under repeated hard impact.

If the ramp sits outdoors year-round in a harsh climate, aluminum avoids the rust problem entirely. If it takes daily abuse from heavy equipment, steel absorbs that abuse longer.

Maintenance Requirements
Steel ramps need periodic inspection for rust, especially at welds, joints, and any spot where the coating has worn through. Aluminum ramps need far less corrosion-related maintenance, but their lighter frame calls for closer attention to structural fatigue over time, particularly on ramps used at or near their weight limit.

Weight and Mobility
Aluminum ramps weigh significantly less than steel ramps of the same size, which makes them easier to reposition without heavy equipment. If your ramp needs to move between dock locations or job sites regularly, that weight difference adds up in labor and time saved.

Steel ramps stay put once positioned, which is an advantage for a permanent or semi-permanent installation where mobility isn’t a priority.

Cost and Resale Value
Steel ramps typically cost less upfront than comparable aluminum models. Aluminum carries a price premium tied to the material itself and the corrosion resistance it delivers.

Both materials hold resale value well when properly maintained. Steel ramps with a well-maintained coating and aluminum ramps with no corrosion to worry about both resell close to their working lifespan, not their calendar age.
