The Pre-Shift Yard Ramp Inspection Checklist
This checklist covers general inspection points and doesn’t replace your ramp manufacturer’s inspection guidance or a documented safety program specific to your facility.
A two-minute inspection catches most ramp failures before they become a shift-ending incident. Make it a routine step before the first load crosses, not a once-a-month formality.
Why Every Shift, Not Just Once a Week
Conditions change daily: weather, temperature swings, new operators, different load types. A ramp that passed inspection yesterday can develop a problem overnight, ice on the deck, a loosened anchor chain, a crack that widened under the last shift’s heaviest load. Checking before every shift catches what a weekly check would miss.
Structural Integrity
- Look for visible cracks, bends, or warping anywhere on the frame.
- Check welds and joints for signs of stress or separation.
- Confirm the ramp sits flush and stable against the dock or trailer, with no rocking or shifting under foot pressure.
Deck Surface
- Clear the deck of debris, oil, ice, or standing water before use.
- Check grating or decking for damage, missing sections, or excessive wear that could reduce traction.
- Confirm the surface provides adequate grip for the conditions, wet decking needs attention before a loaded forklift crosses it.
Safety Curbs and Side Rails
- Confirm side rails and safety curbs are intact and securely attached.
- Check for damage from previous forklift contact that could compromise their function.
Anchoring and Stabilization
- Verify safety chains or anchoring hardware are connected and show no signs of wear or damage.
- Confirm the ramp can’t shift away from the dock or trailer during a crossing.
- Check wheel chocks or stabilizing legs, if equipped, are properly deployed.
Capacity and Signage
- Confirm the capacity plate or rating label is present and legible.
- Cross-check the load you’re moving, forklift weight included, against the ramp’s rated capacity before crossing.
Hydraulic and Moving Components
For ramps with hydraulic lift or leveling features:
- Check for fluid leaks around hoses, fittings, and cylinders.
- Confirm the ramp holds its position without drifting once set.
- Listen for unusual noise during operation, grinding or knocking indicates a problem worth investigating before use.
When to Take a Ramp Out of Service
Any of the following means stop and address it before the ramp goes back into use:
- A crack or weld failure anywhere on the frame
- Missing or damaged safety curbs
- Anchoring hardware that won’t hold securely
- A capacity plate that’s missing or unreadable
- Any hydraulic leak or failure to hold position
